San Diego, California Travel Agent
Eco-Tourism and Sustainable Travel
I have a special affinity for planning nature-oriented adventures and sustainable travel experiences. I grew up hiking, backpacking, and camping in California where my dad was a Boy Scout leader; he got permission to bring me along on their trips and I loved those adventures.
As a travel agent, I am conscious of the impact travelers have and familiar with hotels and other suppliers who minimize human impact and use tourism to promote conservation. Sustainability efforts usually enhance your trip and without even realizing it, you are doing good. Some wonderful examples include Iceland, where geothermal heat is harnessed to power almost everything. Here, you can soak in natural thermal baths at the Blue Lagoon and stay toasty even in the coldest days of winter walking on heated sidewalks.
The Brando on the island of Tetiaroa in French Polynesia is a poster child for sustainability complementing high-end luxury. The resort is powered by solar energy and--a bit like Iceland in reverse--it taps cool water cycled from the depths of the ocean for its air conditioning. They raise much of their own produce and are committed to protecting the culture and ecology of the island. Interested guests can tour their sustainable projects, but many guests just enjoy knowing that their stay is having a positive effect.
Some resorts and lodges actually house research centers where guests can opt to work alongside scientists. In Belize, my ten-year-old son and I worked on a project researching lionfish. They are a beautiful but invasive species and greatly damage the reefs. On our dives, we helped record water temperatures and spear lionfish, and it was amazing to participate in actual research.
There are also wonderful projects in Africa where you can help in various ways, or simply know that by going out on game drives, trekking to see gorillas and staying at the lodges, you are helping preserve endangered species and nature reserves.
When my son was eight, we visited a remote village in South America that lived by subsistence farming and fishing. He was surprised that children completed school there at age ten. We were not sure how much he understood, but two years later, in response to a comment about poverty, my son said that poverty is different in different cultures. “Sometimes people live differently. You do not feel impoverished if you have everything you believe you need.” That is the kind of insights children can get when they travel.
Nature preserves beckon even in very developed areas. In England, visiting Dartmoor National Park, we were startled to be driving along country roads lined by hedges and suddenly find ourselves in the open moors. Our guide explained that these areas are underlain by granite fields where tree roots cannot penetrate. As an English literature major, the moors brought to mind scenes from Wuthering Heights and Sherlock Holmes and it was exciting to see a different side of England.
If you are looking to get back to nature, have authentic connections with non-Western cultures, or simply to travel in eco-friendly ways, I would love to help you.
